The hammer region occupies one-fourth of the land surface of the south omo zone, 222 km square kilometers. The climate is, on the whole, semi desert although there are some areas like buska which are moderate continental. Temperature extremes range from +40 centigrade in the region. There are three tribes living in the hammer region, which are hammer, kara and arbore tribes. The region is inhabited by 75000 people of the three tribes.
